T-Minus 24 Hours Grandma-EV, August 6, 2026August 6, 2026 Monday, August 6, 2026I am in a packing and list-checking frenzy! I hope I don’t forget anything. I have never been away from home this long, so I’m over-thinking things. It’s daunting. Several friends have told me, “There are stores on your route. You don’t have to take EVERYTHING!”Uhhh… I have yet to embrace that thought!Big Tasks-1. Wash and groom the stinky puppy –Meet Bree! She is our 8 month old West Highland White Terrier. and our faithful travel companion.She doesn’t much like the bath but toleates it well. Drying off on her nubby mat is lots more fun!All clean and looking neat for the the start of the big journey tomorrow. 2. Last Laundry – I’ll spare you the site of dirty laundry. These empty baskets are proof of my accomplishments today. 3. Bake Bread – This takes some explanation. I am a sourdough addict. I have been making sourdough for a decade (or more), way before COVID made it popular. But only in the last year have I been keeping it up consistently. Almost weekly.I made an extra starter to take to my daughter in Canada. She wants to learn to make sourdough, but mostly she wants me to make some for her to eat! So, besides her starter, there is a dough in the fridge on bulk cold ferment that will need to be baked into two loaves today.Yum! Bread for the road! (If you’re seeing the image, I got it all done!) Off Topic - My sourdough starter was commercially purchased San Francisco Sourdough, though after all these years it may have been replaced by a local wild yeast. I live about 60 miles from San Francisco, so maybe a close relative?You HAVE to name your starter. It's required. After all, it's like having millions of microscopic pets! Mine is called Karlton the Doughman. If you ever watched the TV show Rhoda, you'll get the pun. "Karl" (with a "K") is the name of the fog in San Francisco. They used to say wild yeast was ambient in the air. I figured that Karl the San Fran Fog carried my starter strain with it. So, the name is an homage to their origins. However, now they say the wild yeast is actually in the flour. Hrmm? Preparations: New Storage Bins –This was a last-minute purchase from Target. I love them! Two sizes. They fit great. They are soft, so if they fall off the shelves, it shouldn’t hurt anything. And… I have them FULL! Bed Mod –We like the straps on the bed, but getting the hooks in the little holes is annoying. Here is our mod. Nylon webbing scraps, 12″ long, trimmed off some ratchet straps, ends burned to prevent fraying. Grommets set in the ends. Fold in half, attach with bolts, nuts and fender washers to the existing holes. The holes on the wall side had to be drilled all the way through the square tubing. Our first drill holes in the new Pebble!Hard to see, but now the black, stretchy straps attach to the handle-like loops, with the original hooks on the window side, carabiners on the wall side as we never take them all the way off. And because we are both old sailors, green is on starboard and red is on port. If you know, you KNOW. Starlink Mini –This is our StarLink Mini mounted to our glass roof. Can you see it?We don’t care for the glass roof. It’s hot, it glares on your face, and when you sit in the front seat, you really can’t see out of it anyway. So, we bought an OEM shade for the glass roof. It’s a little stretchy. We were able to reinstall the shade right over the top of the Mini. It will make it a little bit more fiddly to take it out if we have to put it on the ground somewhere. We will see how this works! New tech to play with is always fun! Trip Timeline: 8/7 Friday – Leave bright and early. Stop at my son’s old house in Lathrop to pick up some last things. He finally sold it!Charge in Firebaugh at the Rivian Adventure Network. Arrive at son’s house in Santa Clarita.8/8-8/9 Sat. & Sun.
