Epic, Electric Road Trip Adventure #1 – The Count Down

Saturday, 4-26-2025 

Grandpa-EV and I are planning an epic road trip adventure. We will be driving our Silverado EV from our home in Northern California to our daughter’s house in Ottawa, Canada. Neither of us has ever driven farther than about halfway across the US. We will be staying with our daughter and her family for about 6 weeks. 

Today we packed the bed of truck completely full, under the hard tonneau cover. My daughter moved to Canada a few years back. We are taking her some boxes of her childhood toys and other mementos. Her grandparents also left her several things, China, and twin curio cabinets made by her grandpa. It seemed like just a few things when we were planning this journey, but it has grown to fill the available space.

The hard tonneau will keep everything fairly dry. We only packed things back there that would not be affected by water, or they got wrapped in tarps or packed in plastic bins. It also allows us to securely lock the items in the bed.

More plastic bins are going in the back seat. We folded the seats up, but left the backs in place. This gave us the most room to pack in the back seat. Grandpa-EV was worried that the metal rails, on the floor, under the seats, would wear and puncture the bottoms of plastic bins. So he came up with this solution…

Our Itinerary:

Day 1, Tue.: Leave after work, drive out of California and halfway across Nevada, about 6 hours. 

Day 2, Wed.: Drive all day to Wyoming

Day 3, Thur.: Drive all day to Iowa

Day 4, Fri.: Drive all day to the upper part of lower Michigan. 

Day 5, Sat.: Buy sailboat and get it road-worthy, drive the last 9 hours to daughter’s house, towing the boat. 

Day 6, Sun.: Arrive in the wee hours.
